Holiday Heat: Mixing Men with Merriment
Q.
While most single people get sad and lonely over being without a significant other during the holidays, I like to think of it as an opportunity. Lots of parties. Lots of men. Do you have any suggestions or tips on how to subtly pick up men during the holiday season, especially at a company Christmas party? There are a lot of hot guys in my company. I think it's a perfect time to score a New Year's date. My friend thinks it's inappropriate to hit on guys in the office. What do you think?
A.
Is it inappropriate to hit on men in the office? Well, stay away from your married boss, and concentrate on the divorced guy who works on a different floor. (Better yet in a different building if your firm is really large!) Also, to keep from being the butt of water-cooler gossip, cool it with the eggnog at the company bashes. You don't want to get a rep as too quick to hightail it, lips puckered, toward the old mistletoe.
That said, I love your grab the bulls by their horns (so to speak) attitude! You're correct that many singles launch into a serious gloom-and-doom mode over the holidays, not emerging from this seasonal sadness until after Valentine's Day. And that doesn't get them anywhere except into bed accompanied only by a migraine.
As for subtle pickup tips, how about volunteering to be in charge of the company grab bag? Or the tried and true trick: collaring a man to ask where he got his tie, you'd love to get your brother one for Christmas. A company party is also a great place to make a good impression on your married co-workers; you never know who might have an eligible hot neighbor, brother or friend. And, if you're truly ambitious, host a singles-only Holiday or New Year's Eve party with some femme friends and include on the guest list cute, unattached guys from the office.
