Vision Loss, Numbness
My older sister has been complaining about sudden loss of vision in one or both of her eyes and feeling numb or "paralyzed" from the waist down on several different occasions over the last six months. She had her first child a year ago by cesarean section with a spinal block. Could her symptoms be a result of this? I'm scared to death she has multiple sclerosis or diabetes. Am I overreacting?
Your sister needs to see a doctor -- now! Her symptoms are not a result of her spinal a year ago; the chances of developing numbness or weakness after a spinal or epidural are extremely low, almost to the point of being nonexistent. The symptoms you describe could be caused by a "mini-stroke," a brain tumor, atypical migraine headache, multiple sclerosis or other neurologic disease, or many other conditions. These symptoms should not be ignored. They require immediate medical attention -- in person, not over the Internet!
