Three Months Pregnant, No Weight Gain
Q.
I'm three months pregnant and have not gained any weight yet. What's wrong?
A.
Actually, nothing is wrong. You are actually doing things right! Ideally, there is very little weight gain in the first trimester; at most, a woman of normal prepregnancy weight should gain three to five pounds. After the first trimester, a gain of one pound a week will lead to the recommended 25-35 pounds of total weight gain. Women who are overweight to begin with may be asked to gain less, while underweight women may need to gain a little more weight. You should be eating a healthy, well-balanced diet with a lot of variety. This will ensure that both you and the baby receive all the necessary nutrients. Eating and exercising in moderation will also help keep weight gain on track. If you continue to not gain weight after the first trimester, your doctor will review your diet and exercise habits with you. Inadequate weight gain can be associated with a too-small baby.
